Therapy for Self-Harm in Allen, TX

Is This You?
This service is for individuals who are struggling with self-harm or urges to hurt themselves as a way of coping with emotional pain. You may feel overwhelmed by emotions that seem too intense to manage, or you may feel emotionally numb and use self-injury as a way to feel something when everything else feels disconnected. Many individuals describe self-harm as a way to release emotional pressure, punish themselves, regain a sense of control, or temporarily quiet thoughts and feelings that feel unbearable.
At the same time, you may worry that no one will truly understand what you’re experiencing. You might feel stuck between wanting relief and not knowing how else to cope. Many people arrive in therapy feeling hopeless that things can ever be different. Beneath that pain is often a deep desire for relief. Healing is possible.
Why Self-Harm Develops
While every person’s experience is unique, many individuals we work with find that self-injurious behaviors are connected to one or more of the following factors:
Difficulty Managing Intense Emotions
For many people, self-harm becomes a way to cope with emotions that feel too overwhelming to handle. Feelings can build to a point where self-injury feels like the quickest way to find temporary relief.
Feeling Numb, Disconnected, or Empty
Some individuals describe feeling emotionally numb or unable to access their feelings. In these cases, self-injury may serve as a way to feel something tangible when emotional connection feels out of reach.
Harsh Self-Criticism and Low Self-Worth
Many individuals who engage in self-harm struggle with a deeply critical inner voice and feelings of shame. Self-injury can become tied to self-punishment or an attempt to cope with painful beliefs about oneself.
Past Trauma, Stress, or Unresolved Pain
Experiences such as trauma, bullying, family conflict, grief, or chronic stress can leave individuals carrying emotional wounds that feel difficult to process. Self-harm may develop as a way to escape from pain that has not yet been fully understood or healed.
Our Approach
We understand that self-harm is not the problem itself. Rather than focusing solely on stopping the behavior, we work to understand the purpose it has been serving and help clients develop safer ways to meet those needs. Using DBT, CBT, Narrative Therapy, mindfulness, and experiential techniques, we help clients manage distress, regulate emotions, challenge self-critical beliefs, and build a stronger sense of self-worth.
At New Narratives Counseling in Allen, TX, we have experience supporting individuals who struggle with self-harm. Our clinicians utilize evidence-based approaches, including DBT-informed interventions, CBT, mindfulness, and trauma-informed care, to help clients build healthier coping strategies and greater emotional resilience.
