EMDR Therapy in Allen, TX for Trauma & Anxiety

Is This You?
EMDR therapy is for people who feel stuck in patterns they can’t seem to think their way out of. You may appear to have it all together on the outside while internally struggling with anxiety, shame, perfectionism, difficult memories, or the lasting effects of trauma or major life experiences. You’ve likely spent years pushing through, minimizing your pain, or telling yourself you should be over it by now.
You know logically that the past is over, but your mind and body haven’t caught up. You replay conversations, overthink decisions, and find yourself reacting in ways that don’t make sense. Maybe you’re constantly on edge, carrying a deep sense of shame, or feeling like you have to be perfect to be accepted. You’ve gotten good at pushing through and taking care of everyone else, but you’re exhausted by the weight of it. Deep down, you’re tired of merely surviving and hoping there’s a way to finally feel at peace with yourself.
Why You May Feel Stuck
For many people, ongoing distress is not caused by one single event but by a combination of experiences that were overwhelming, chronic, or never fully processed by the nervous system. This can include early life experiences such as emotional neglect or criticism, as well as longer-term survival states like chronic stress or living with illness or instability. Over time, these experiences often shape deep-rooted beliefs such as “I’m not enough,” “I’m not safe,” or “Something is wrong with me.”
Even if you’ve talked about what happened, your nervous system may still hold onto the emotional charge, showing up as triggers, overreactions, or feeling stuck in certain memories. EMDR helps your brain reprocess these experiences so they feel less intense and no longer drive your present-day emotional responses.
Our Approach
We use EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing), an evidence-based therapy that helps your brain and nervous system process experiences that feel stuck. In simple terms, EMDR helps your mind make sense of difficult experiences so they no longer feel as overwhelming, triggering, or present in your day-to-day life. We also integrate grounding and self-compassion practices throughout so you feel supported, safe, and not rushed.
EMDR is not about reliving trauma in detail or being overwhelmed in session. We begin by building safety, learning coping strategies, and identifying the memories or patterns currently impacting you. When you’re ready, we use EMDR techniques such as guided eye movements, tapping, or other forms of bilateral stimulation at a pace that feels manageable. Some sessions focus on active processing, while others center on stabilization, reflection, and strengthening emotional regulation.
Our clinician has specialized training in EMDR and works regularly with clients navigating trauma, anxiety, eating disorders, chronic illness, body image concerns, and deeply rooted negative self-beliefs. EMDR allows us to go beyond insight and support meaningful change at the nervous system level.
What You May Begin to Notice
Clients who engage in EMDR therapy at New Narratives Counseling in Allen, TX often begin to notice: feeling less triggered by memories or situations that used to feel overwhelming; more calm in their body instead of being constantly in survival mode; letting go of shame-based beliefs like “I’m not enough” or “Something is wrong with me”; thinking about the past without feeling like they’re reliving it; and feeling more emotionally present and connected in relationships and daily life.
What to Expect
The first session is focused on getting a clear picture of what’s bringing you in and making sure you feel safe in the process. We’ll talk about what’s been feeling most difficult, a bit of your history, and what you’re hoping will be different. You will never be asked to go into painful memories in detail right away — this time is about connection and creating a foundation of safety before any deeper processing work.
Every person’s healing process is unique and depends on the complexity of what you’re working through. Many clients begin to notice early shifts within the first few sessions. Deeper healing takes time, especially when working through longstanding trauma or shame, but EMDR is designed to create meaningful, lasting change rather than temporary symptom relief.

EMDR therapy can be effective in both in-person and virtual formats, and we’ll decide together what feels like the best fit for you. Watters Road, Suite 241, Allen, TX 75013. Virtual sessions are available to clients throughout Texas. Rate: $175 per session. Superbills provided for out-of-network reimbursement.
